South Carolina Man Shoots at Cops from Lawnmower

CLIO, SC (WBTW) – Officers with the SC Law Enforcement Division were called to investigate after police shot a man who fired at two police officers and a Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Lt. Trevor Murphy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office confirms the confrontation happened off of Highway 9 near Clio Elementary/ Middle School.

SLED spokesperson Thom Berry says SLED crime scene was initially called to help investigate a break in at a convenience store in the 500 block of South Main Street just after 3 a.m. Monday. State law enforcement was called about the shooting two hours later.

According to Berry, two Clio police officers and a deputy with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the break in when they encountered a person riding a lawnmower who fired shots at the investigators. The two police officers then returned fire, hitting the person on the lawnmower.

No law enforcement officers were injured, but the deputy’s car was struck by a bullet.

The person on the lawnmower was taken to a hospital in Dillon for minor injuries. According to Berry, the man shot by police was released from the hospital Monday morning.

A press release from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office says 25-year-old Camelin Demetrius Mcrae, of Clio, was arrested in connection with the shooting after being released from the hospital.

Mcrae is charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and one count of malicious injury to property.

Mcrae is also charged in connection with the burglary at the convenience store in Clio shortly before the shooting incident. He is charged with burglary in the second degree, malicious injury to real property and petit larceny.

The release also says at the time of this incident, Mcrae was out on bond for a prior arrest for burglary in the second degree. He is being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center in Bennettsville and will appear for a bond hearing on Tuesday.
