Sean Thornton Moves from America to his ancestral homeland of Ireland to purchase the family farm on which to settle. His attention turns to fiery redhead Mary Kate Danaher and he makes his intentions known.
But trouble follows poor Sean as he makes an offer on the farm. The Widow Tillane, who owns the farm has ignored the local town boss Red Danaher's offer in favor of Sean's. As word reaches Red, who happens to be Mary Kate's Brother, he forbids her from Marrying Sean Thornton.
Sean and his newfound friend Michaeleen Óge Flynn plot to fool Danaher who does allow the wedding but soon refuses to pay the Dowry for his sister.
Shit gets crazy and we have a town horse race, lots of betting, drinking and small town gossip. Mary Kate thinks her husband has disgraced her for refusing to fight for her dowry and her honor. But Sean has his pwn reason for not wanting to go to fisticuffs with the much bigger Danaher.
As the story unfolds we find out more about Sean and his past. The local Priest, the local Vicar, the town bookie/matchmaker and the old ladies of town all get in on the action as the feud grows hotter. There's plenty of gold old 1950s male chauvinism and simple comedy gags until the climax brings about Sean's revelation of his past, the protestand and catholic church leaders in harmony and the local pub actually closing shop for the day.
This baby was nominated for Oscars for its music, cinematography, acting, directing, screenplay, art direction and best film. Truly one of the best films of the 1950s that still plays well with audiences today.
