Movies you need to see
Some of the best movies are what Hollywood calls "little movies". They may not be the highest budget or most popular, but they tell a good story about a Dude or bunch of Dudes. These are some of The Dude's faves that you may have not seen - but should.
Drag Me to Hell The Unborn
Innocent girl has to decide what to do. This Creepy instant classic is like the movies we used to watch at the Drive-in. Lots of jolts. Great to watch in a theater full of people. This little bank employee is competeing with a real jerk for a promotion. Her Manager is watching as a poor, dirty, stinky old crone begs her not to repo her house. What choice will she make? Fandango - Movie Tickets OnlineGreat trailer. You really want this to creep you out in ways you can't imagine. But it doesn't. It has a few scary looking creature thingies but the plot is flat. Skip this one.

Raising Arizona        The only people who don't love this movie are the ones who think it is a documentary. The Coen Brothers first Smash Hit features a great performances by Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter and Randal "Tex" Cobb. Great use of both precise dialog and meticulous use of the camera Ensure that not a word or a single frame of film was wasted.

Braveheart       Raucus story of a man persecuted by his enemies and betrayed by his friends. Yet he overcame all for the Good of his countrymen. Loosely based on Scottish Hero William Walace (played by Mel Gibson, who also directed).

Raiders of the Lost Ark       Swashbuckling action done right! Steven Spielberg Directed this George Lucas Story about an archeologist who found the Ark of the Covenant just as Hitler's henchmen planned to heist it to power up the third reich. The whole Indiana Jones Series is wonderful and should be a part of everyone's Movie Library. Fantasia       Walt Disney Legendary animated film features some great Classical Music and vivid story telling. It's ok to fall asleep while watching as it makes you have good dreams.
Tron       A Pinnacle of Computer Animation. Frame by frame animation over live characters and a great story of a man who starts a quest for his own interest and ends up saving the world. Danny Deckchair       Whenever an Austalian Movie makes it to the states it is usually worth watching. This one in particular is zany enough to be believable. Workingman Danny wants a vacation more than anything. He works all year for that two week adventure that makes all the sweat worth it. But when things don't work as planned Danny's life is changed along with all those he meets after sailing away on baloons he buys at a pawn shop.
The Ring       The one that started the new form of horror film with the weird effects. Creepy, take the phone off the hook before you watch this. Rocky (1&2)       Fictional Fighter Rocky Balboa's story is so great that the city erected a statue to this movie character played by Sylvester Stlone (who also wrote - don't let his mumbling fool ya, Sly is a smart guy). Never-was boxing hopeful gets a chance at the champ in what everyone expects to be a rout. Rocky's tough trainer has other plans.
The Castle       Another Aussie indy about a regular guy who just wants to be left alone with his wife, kids, greyhounds, junk cars and neighbors in a forgotten neighborhood by the airport. Big Developers want the land - "But it just ain't right!" 8 Seconds       Before cowboys were gay they were men who rode bulls and loved women. Very well-told story of real life rodeo champ Lane Frost. Don't let anyone tell you anything about this film - just watch it. Even though it has a love story written in, it is a real Man's movie. Make sure you watch the credits, too.
Apple iTunes Sizzling Summer Savings! Ice Age       Ray Ramano and John Leguizamo lend their voices to this really funny film. Animated by Blue Sky Studios, who also did Robots, this high quality cartoon catches your eye at every turn. The story is full of odd couple type humour and adventure. The opening short has you on the edge of your seat and you stay there until the final credits.
Fandango       Kevin Reynolds, who later directed the mega-budget Kevin Costner flop Water World, Did much better with Costner on a tiny budget. The Groovers are graduating from college and need to Dig up ole Dom. That means a trip across texas, dodging the draft and a stone soup wedding. Marvin J Mcintyre is fantastic as skydive intsructor Truman Sparks. The Incredibles       Every Pixar film is worth watching, but the sixth one Is Incredibles! This roaring send-up of the other side of superheros is smart, funny and incredibly animated in the Pixar way. Brad Bird's vision of how "Supers" live when the cape comes off. The DVD is Packed with extras and a bonus short, JackJack Attack, that melds with the movie in a fantastic way.
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy       This Book was made into a radio series in the 1970's and was a wonderful treat for the imagination. The Film was unbeleivably true to the vision of the book both in feel and in story. Make sure ot take the phone off the hook, get a large drink and prepop some corn because this one shouldn't be paused. The African Queen       I never really appreciated Humphry Bogart until I saw him kickin' the crap out of his "baby". Charlie Allnut is the Rooster Gogburn of Tanzania in this tale of a guy who just wanted to be left alone with his bottle. Unfortunately the local missionary dies, leaving Charley to escort the Reverend's sister back to civilization. The only thing in the way is the entire German Navy.
Unforgiven       Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and Richard Harris ina story as old as time anda s true to the old west as it comes. Gritty, Mean and with very little hollywood fluff, Unforgiven tells the story of revenge and brutal justice at any cost.

Behind the Mask

The Rise of Leslie Vernon

This Dude is really whacked!
You've seen Jason, Freddy, Michael Meyers and the rest. Now meet Leslie Vernon. He's the supernatural psychikiller on the rise. Luckily a documentary film crew follows along to give us inside access to the mind of a madman. Kinda. Behind the Mask is one of the most creative, horror movies ever. Scream defined the rules for a horror movie. Leslie Vernon rewrites them.

Hot Rod

I loved this in the theater and had to have it when it came out on DVD. Andy Samberg is just plain funny and his "crew" are the best dufuses that have ever graced the big screen. I'm not gonna spoil it - you have to watch this movie!
Lovejoy made a great stepdad and Borat's Babymama was a fun and cute chick for Rod to awkwardly try to woo.

QUOTES:
  • "This is my hat now! This is totally my hat! "
  • "Cool Beans"
  • "But if it was prison rules, I'd put my money on the taco"
  • "I am gonna get you better, and then I'm gonna beat you to death!"
Myrtle Beach Bum's Irish Movies that'll make you want to shake yer shillaly and dance a jig
The Quiet Man         The classic tale of Sean "Trooper" Thornton. Sean returns to the Motherland to buy plot of land and snag a wife. The Wife is a firey redhead named Mary Kate Danaher, sister to "Red" the town bully, who also has his eyes on Sean's plot. There's plenty of fun in this bit of eyre. Dear Frankie       Young Frankie's mom has been sending him letters since he was tiny. They've all been fake, addressed from his "dad". His real dad is a piece of work and his mom has made up a seafaring wanderer who sends Frankie letters from a ficticious freighter that frequents distant ports. When the ficticous ship turns out to be real and headed to Frankies home town things go desperately wrong, then maybe perfectly right. But it could be a real disaster!
A Little Bit of Irish       Bing Crosby selections from the past. Songs include: Molly Malone, The Rose of Tralee, Bold Fenian Men, Send me my Desire, Irish Jig, Ignatius John, Across the Irish Sea,Isle of Innisfree, Off to Philidelphia, Gaelic Lament, The Fool and the Mother, The Boys of Wexford/Captain Kelly's Kitchen, Off to Dublin in the Green, Macnamara's Band, and of course WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING. Leprechaun Pot of Gore Collection       Yay! All five Leprechaun movies in the proverbial pot of gore! Dan O'Grady starts it all off by trying to steal the little guys pot of gold. From there we learn more and more truth about the vicious little critter who ain't about to share any lucky charms.
The Brothers McMullen       Is a chick flick where three Irish Catholic brothers share emotions and deal with relationships and all that "manly" emotional blarney. Nothing reallly happens except you cry a lot. The Devil's Own       Frankie McGuire (cute little Brad Pitt) is an IRA killer who's visiting America to buy weapons. He's posing as a young immigrant in search of work. McGuire is sponsored by Tom O'Meara (tough guy Harrison Ford), a New York cop who knows nothing about Frankie's real identity. Things go wrong with the arms deal, putting both Frankie and the O'Meara family in a real tough spot.
Angela's Ashes       Frank McCourt made great with Irish wit when dealing with misery. This tale in particular is his very own - told from his perspective as a lad in Limerick whose drunken dad and overworked mom trudge on through the endless poverty and cruelty that marked the 1930's in much of the Emerald Isle. Malachy McCourt's heirloom to his son was all he had, a way of weaving a story that you just had to hear. Luckily the younger McCourt found a typewriter and a publisher and made good for the whole family. This goes a long way to stereotype that Irish were nothing but shiftless drunks, Thanks. In the Name of The Father       Based somewhat on the story of Gerry Conlon and the Guildford four, It gives a good look into the relationship between a man and his slacker son. It also shows that a boy without purpose can become a man with a mission. Nicely acted and lots of Irish-Anglo conflict, this gritty crime drama tops the list of Daniel Day Lewis films.
The Commitments       One of the greatest movies about music and musicians ever. Jimmy Rabbitte wants to form the "World's Hardest Working Band". Jimmy's experience in music so far is selling bootleg tapes from a duffel bag in Dublin's street markets. Somehow he manages to bring together a group of the "blackest blacks in Europe" and they actually begin to make beautiful music. They just need a big break. The big break is on it's way when The Commitments encounter the things that have brought down many a musician - Family, friends and the fame they have worked for. The Magdelene Sisters       The only thing worse than a flirty Catholic girl is being a pregnant Catholic girl, even if it was because your cousin raped you. The Magdelene Sisters were good enough to take these troublesome creatures out of circulation until 1996. This is the tale of three such young women in the 1960's who faced the brutality of the pious nuns. Unrelenting drudgery of laundry (the nuns were paid, the girls got gruel), constant prayer and complete seclusion (even from their own families) were to get the women to heaven.
Waking Ned Devine       O what a tangled web! The luck o' the Irish hits Ned Devine Smack between the eyes. He wins the Lottery bigtime - but the shock of it all gives his ticker a fit. When the townsfolk find him dead they conspire to have a ringer collect the winnings so they can split it. Borstal Boy       When Brendan Behan was sent to a reform school for attempting to set a bomb in Liverpool, His life took a series of turns that changed him. This is his story.
IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT IRELAND       traces the history and legends of ancient Ireland. Beginning in 2000 B.C. -- when Stone Age farmers built some of the largest and most spectacular Neolithic monuments in Europe -- the series explores events and stories from millennia of history, to 1167 A.D., when the Norman invasion placed Ireland under control of England's king. St. Patrick: The Irish Legend       Movie version of the Story of St. Patrick.
Rudy       EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE! Ok it's Irish-American. but ya can't get any more Irish, can ya? Rudy's hopes, dreams, ambitions - really his whole life revolves around him playing football for Notre Dame. He has worked, studied, practiced, done everything possible to make his dream come true. Unfortunately Rudy is just a little too small and a little to slow to play at that level. But that doesn't stop him. It may not have gotten an oscar but it is one of the top movies of all time.
Celtic Woman       Hot chicks sing and play the music of the Emerald Isle. The Celtic Tiger Starring Michael Flatley       Michael Flatley, the fastest feet on earth returns to the stage to spearhead his powerful new dance spectacular, Celtic Tiger.
