 "Will someone please help me?"
"I was just someone who helped another human being. "

Lenny Skutnik is a name you don't forget.
He was just a dude on his way home from work. January 13 1982. Lenny was a printing dude at the Congressional Budget Office. He had pulled over with several people because a plane had just crashed on the 14th street bridge.
Lenny came down to the riverbank where others had been helping. People had tied jumper cables, scarves and even pantyhose together to throw out lifelines to the passengers of flight 90. He heard a lady call out, "will someone please help?" What else could he do?
Mr Skutnik, a guy with a wife at home who was waiting dinner, jumped in. He swam about thirty feet, not far- but far enough, and grabbed Priscilla. He pushed her and swam, pushed and swam until the folks on the bank could reach out and pull her in.
He still works in the Congressional Budget Office, still has the wife, just an ordinary guy with extraordinary fortitude. |
