Bob Ross taught America the Joy of Painting.
From 1983 to 1995 Bob entertained us by teaching us to paint. His calm tones lulled us off to the worlds he created right before our eyes.
His trademark Afro became the logo for the Joy of Painting instructional materials. And even though hundreds of thousands have learned from his teaching method, Bob never formally studied art. He studied mechanics in college and started painting in his spare time while in the Air Force.
My Roomate Eddie Hill used to wake me up and have the TV tuned to Bob every saturday Morning. It was great to watch this old hippy dude attack a canvas with knives and big ass brushes. When he got done it would be a miracle. Every Week. Sometimes you'd se him make scraggly line right on in the middle of a peaceful meadow and find yourself yelling at the TV. "Don't do that, Bob - you'll ruin the picture!" Then it would turn into a little cabin with a fireplace to warm yourself or a rock that you might sit on to rest during your hike.
He could really spread the colors. |
