"It is possible with great determination, hard work, and self reliance to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds."

Ben Carson was raised up by his Mom in Detroit. His mother cracked the whip and made Ben and his brother read 2 novels a week and write reports on them.
When He was a man he realized that she could not read his reports. She knew how hard life was being illiterate and understood that her sons' ticket to a better life was education. Dude realized his mom was on to something and hit the books like a champ. He nailed an academic scholarship to Yale, man. Toughed it out and didn't party too much; Got a psychology degree and headed back to Michigan for Med school. Then he became a brain surgeon and was the youngest ever Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins
Dr Carson funds scholarships to help encourage kids to work hard and achieve their dreams. He doesn't believe self esteem comes from praise - it is the fruit of hard work. As kids work and are rewarded for work they realize their potential.
You might recognize Doctor Ben as a movie star as well. When the Farrelly Brothers made Stuck On You, they figured who better to separate the twins on screen than a guy who had actually done it. Carson led the team that allowed several sets of conjoined twins to be separated. Even when they were joined at the head.
Will he make a career of acting now?
After all it ain't brain surgery. |
