Sometimes you tell a dude he can't do something and he will smack you in the mouth. Sometimes he will make you cry in a whole 'nother way. Pearl Fryar does the latter. Years back he heard someone say they didn't want a colored dude in their neighborhood 'cause they don't keep up their lawns well. He just took that and figgered he'd dispell that myth. Pearl set out back in 1984 to win "yard of the month". He ended up as an international phenomenon Pearl would go to the local nursery and take plants they were throwing out. He'd nurture them and shape them into living sculptures. Before long he had not only won yard of the month but was an artist that has outlived Andy Warhol's 15 minutes. Pearl says he has had 30. Pearl has a nice way with words. He chooses them wisely and wittily. He had met this girl on the schoolbus when he was young and they really fit each other. After years, when he wanted to make it permanent, he said to Metra, "I think we might as well get the blood test." That was his proposal! And she actually said yes! They have been best friends for 'bout forty years. She is just as much a hoot as he is - a winning smile and eyes that draw you in. Really cool folks. Pearl's Topiary draws visitors from around the world. His work is on permanent display in Museums (well, outside the museum because they're trees) and has drawn tourists to a tiny South Carolina town that people used to just drive by. |
